JRS Malta is seeking to recruit a LAWYER, to work with asylum seekers and immigrants in Malta.

Terms and conditions

The post is a full-time post, however applications from individuals wishing to work part-time or reduced hours will also be considered. Individuals who cannot work at least 16-20 hours per week, of which at least 10 hours are on weekdays between 09:00 and 17:00, need not apply. Salary offered will be commensurate to experience.

Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Be in possession of a degree of Doctor of Laws, Master of Advocacy, or an equivalent/comparable qualification (Level 7 of the Malta Qualifications Framework).
  • Have a basic knowledge of Refugee Law and Human Rights Law.
  • Have an excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Be able to work independently and take initiative within a fast paced environment.
  • Have good writing skills.
  • Be flexible, able to communicate effectively, and willing to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Be willing to work with and for people from diverse cultures.
  • Be of good moral character and demonstrate a sound work ethic.

The following will be considered an asset:

  • Experience practicing law and/or working in the refugee humanitarian field
  • Experience practicing in the local courts.
  • The ability to understand, write and speak Maltese fluently.
  • Knowledge of other relevant languages, such as French and Arabic.
  • Driving licence and own transport.

Job description

Prospective candidates should be aware that the post involves a significant amount of outreach in open and closed centres and client contact. It requires a willingness to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

The selected candidate will be expected to:

  • Provide information and legal advice to migrants and asylum seekers on integration and protection related issues, both in the office as well as in detention or open centres.
  • Provide legal assistance and representation in individual cases.
  • Conduct outreach in detention and reception centres with other members of the JRS Malta team.
  • Serve as a point of contact for migrants and asylum seekers and receive and respond to requests for information or assistance.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the JRS team to ensure that, as far as possible, a holistic service is provided to each client.
  • Identify asylum seekers and migrants who are in a particularly vulnerable situation, or who are otherwise in need of services and/or support.
  • Maintain updated records of all services provided and assist with project-related tasks and activities, including reporting, as necessary.
  • Undertake any other tasks that may be necessary.
