The Migrants Commission, JRS Malta and the Justice and Peace Commission urge the authorities to drop the charges brought against three youths who are being prosecuted for terrorism.

Two years ago, on 28 March 2019, the merchant vessel ElHiIblu1 arrived in Malta and three teenagers were arrested and accused of having committed a multiplicity of crimes, including acts of terrorism. An alliance of human rights activists calls on Malta to drop the charges immediately.

Whilst we fully appreciate the serious challenges posed by the arrival by sea of asylum-seekers, we underline that, as the state responsible for the search and rescue area where the rescue took place, Malta is responsible for coordinating the disembarkation of the rescued migrants in a port of safety.

We strongly urge the authorities to ensure that the upcoming Census includes questions which capture the rich diversity which we come across regularly in Malta on a day-to-day basis in the course of our work.
