Call for applications for the post of Project Assistant within the JRS Malta

Project to promote access to fair and stable employment for refugees and asylum seekers in Malta

JRS Malta is seeking to contract a PROJECT ASSISTANT to work on a project to promote access to fair and stable employment for refugees and asylum seekers in Malta, which is funded by the Julia Taft Refugee Grant.

The project aims to address the barriers faced by asylum seekers to find and retain legal and stable employment by strengthening the employment services currently being provided by JRS Malta Foundation, and by engaging with other stakeholders, including unions and employers’ associations, to tackle the issues of exploitation and abuse and promote the creation of truly inclusive work places.

Terms and conditions

The selected candidate will be offered a three month contract of service. Salary offered will be commensurate to experience.

Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • be in possession of a degree equivalent to Level 6 of the Malta Qualifications Framework;

  • Have proven experience in project management and reporting;

  • Have knowledge and experience of working in the refugee/humanitarian field;

  • Have an excellent command of written and spoken English;

  • Possess extensive organisational and communication skills;

  • Be able to work independently and on their own initiative, while working under the joint supervision of the Psychosocial Team Coordinator and Operations Manager.

A working knowledge of Maltese would be considered an asset.

Job description

The selected candidate will be expected to implement a fixed number of tasks within the project, including:

  • Researching the barriers to finding and keeping employment (based on feedback from forced migrants and stakeholders), including additional barriers within the current Covid-19 context, and preparing a report on this accordingly as a project deliverable;

  • Recording examples of good practice in the area of socially inclusive employment;

  • Develop training programme and materials for volunteers assisting with our CV service;

  • Develop programme, content, and materials for information sessions on employment, focusing on employment legislation, workers’ rights, the role of trade unions, and remedies in case of exploitation;

  • Produce a script and liaise with potential videographers, in preparation for an informational video aimed at facilitating access to fair employment for migrants, and outlining the support services available as part of this process;

  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders to do preliminary ground work aimed at understanding the steps to be taken in setting up co-operatives;

  • Study/explore the existing regulatory frameworks for job placements, in order to determine what, if any, changes need to be made for  forced migrants and asylum seekers to benefit from this opportunity;

  • Liaise with migrant-led organisations to explore avenues for collaboration;

  • Provide initial support in organising a final conference to share lessons learnt throughout this project;

  • Make contact with potential employers, and facilitate communication with job seekers where feasible.
