Call for Applications for the post of RESEARCHER within the JRS Malta “Access to Protection” project Young asylum seekers living in Malta: Exploring youth transitions

JRS Malta is seeking to contract the services of a RESEARCHER to undertake research into the experiences of young asylum seekers and beneficiaries of protection living in Malta, as part of the project ‘Access to Protection’, which is funded by the Fondation Assistance International – FAI.

The research “Young asylum seekers living in Malta: Exploring youth transitions” seeks to explore the intersections of youth transitions with the experience of forced migration. Specifically, the study seeks to understand:

–          How young refugees in Malta perceive, experience and navigate their transition to adulthood and independence (including socioeconomic and legal pathways)

–          How, if at all,  law, policies and service provision shape their aspirations, needs,  and experiences within this process

Terms and conditions

The researcher / research assistant will be contracted to work a maximum of 180 hours over a 3-month period, which period may be extended by agreement between the parties. The salary offered will be commensurate to qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

Applicants must:

→  be in possession of a Masters Degree in either Youth & Community Studies, Social Work, Sociology, Education, Anthropology, Humanitarian Action or a related subject – other equivalent qualifications may be considered

→  demonstrate experience in qualitative research and data collection

→  be fluent in English

→  have good writing and communication skills, and the ability to work in a team

→  be willing to work with people from diverse cultures

→  be based in Malta, and have some familiarity with the local context and key stakeholders

A genuine interest in the field of study and the population concerned, previous research or work experience working with asylum seekers and refugees and/or youth, and knowledge of other languages, such as French and Arabic, will also be considered an asset.

Job description

The researcher within the JRS Malta project Young asylum seekers living in Malta: Exploring youth transitions will be working under the supervision of the Principle Investigator (PI).

The role will include:

→   Contributing to the literature review with the PI and members of the Project Core Team

→     Organising and conducting data collection

→     Working with the PI on detailed data analysis and writing up the research report

In the fulfilment of these tasks the Researcher is accountable to the Principle Investigator and the Project Manager.
